The original Toyota Supra rose to fame through being featured in The Fast and the Furious. The movie was the highest-grossing film of 2001, and ended up being a landmark event for car culture. Due to the movie, the import tuning scene exploded (metaphorically). The Toyota Supra became a symbol of this scene.
This tuning culture couldn’t get enough of the tuning-friendly engine under the hood of the Toyota Supra. But the original Supra actually had many more strengths than just the engine. Unfortunately, these strengths were often overlooked as fans held an idealized image of what they believed the Supra to be. Hopefully, the new GR Supra can change this, and drivers will realize what an excellent all-around machine this Toyota sports car is.
Why did the filmmakers choose a Toyota Supra for The Fast and the Furious?
The makers of The Fast and the Furious were originally going to use a Nissan 240SX for the role that the Supra ended up playing in the movie; that’s what the script called for. However, when it came time for production, they realized that it would be too difficult to pull Vince off of the truck and through the car’s sunroof in the climactic scene. They needed a vehicle that had both a targa top and credibility as a performance car; the Toyota Supra checked these boxes.
Toyota GR Supra Vs. Toyota Supra
We’re happy to report that the new Toyota GR Supra lives up to the legend. The driving experience of the new model is just as fun as everyone remembers the original to be. Akio Toyoda himself was a huge fan of the old Supra, having spent many hours driving it around the track. He’s likely out there enjoying the new one as you read this.

GR is short for “Gazoo Racing.”
