What is the Auto LSD dashboard light on a Toyota RAV4?

Toyota RAV4 Auto LSD System

When driving your Toyota RAV4, you may have noticed a light on your dashboard that says, “Auto LSD.” While this may seem like a very mysterious moniker, it’s actually the indicator for a helpful system in your vehicle. So what is Auto LSD on the Toyota RAV4?

The LSD in Auto LSD stands for, “Limited-Slip Differential.” This is a traction control system that controls engine output and begins braking when one of the drive wheels begins to slip. When used in the right situation, this improves vehicle control.

When should I use Auto LSD?

Auto LSD should only be used when wheel slip occurs in very severe conditions, such as off-road or in deep snow. The Auto LSD system is intended for use only in extreme conditions. Don’t turn it on when the vehicle is in motion or when wheel-spin is occurring. It should not be left on during normal driving.

When using Auto LSD, increased steering effort may be required. You may have to be more careful to keep control while cornering. If the vehicle begins to slip while the system is engaged, the Auto LSD icon will begin flashing, indicating the system is working to control the slippage.

If you do end up slipping, get fixed up at our Toyota-certified Service Center

How do I turn on Auto LSD?

Auto LSD can be engaged by pressing the “VSC Off” switch. This button has an image that looks like the silhouette of a vehicle with two wavy lines behind the wheels, and the word “Off” beneath. When pressed, the VSC Off and Auto LSD indicators will light up on the instrument cluster, confirming that the system is engaged. To turn the system off, press the “VSC Off” button again.

Traction Control and Auto LSD

Traction Control works to optimize control during normal driving conditions. It reduces engine power when a wheel slips and applies braking to that wheel. When you turn on Auto LSD, Traction Control turns off. Auto LSD sends power to the wheel with the greatest traction, rather than reducing engine power to send the wheel forward.

Why does Auto LSD automatically shut off?

If the brakes become overheated during operation, the Auto LSD system will automatically shut off. However, it will be restored automatically after a short time. The system will also shut off automatically when the engine is turned off and will remain off when restarted.

Shiny white 2020 Toyota Supra cruises down a street drenched with golden sun.

Who makes the 2020 Toyota Supra engine?

Fans of the Toyota Supra have spent nearly two decades in a dark and aimless valley. Their fearless leader, the Supra, took its leave in 2002 and was afterwards known only in whispered rumors. Finally, Toyota has rewarded their loyalty with the birth of a fifth generation Toyota Supra for the 2020 model year.

But these same fans also tend to be hesitant. Like any passionate followers, they want to make sure the new Supra does justice to its vaunted model line. One aspect that has received some attention is the engine. The Toyota 2JZ-GTE machine that powered fourth generation of the model (and helped to make it the fastest Toyota of all time) still basks in well-deserved legendary status.

Like parents concerned about their child’s choice of Homecoming date, Supra acolytes everywhere are inquiring with pointed curiosity: who makes the 2020 Toyota Supra engine?

Toyota Supra Engine Manufacturer

The 2020 Toyota Supra engine is designed by BMW and manufactured by a third-party assembly group called Magna Steyr. Magna Steyr engineers, develops and assembles automobiles for other companies on a contractual basis. They assemble the 2020 Toyota Supra alongside the G29 BMW Z4 in Graz, Austria.

What engine is in the 2020 Toyota Supra?

The 2020 Toyota Supra uses a BMW 58 straight-six engine. This innovatively engineered powerplant features an exhaust manifold cast directly onto the cylinder head. It has two exhaust ports, and an efficient water-to-air intercooler incorporated directly into the plastic intake manifold.

A teardown of the 2020 Supra reveals that the BMW 58 engine boasts a robust crankshaft, strong connecting rods and high-quality pistons. The block is capable of handling even higher amounts of horsepower than already provided with its closed-deck design.

Though some die-hard Toyota fans were skeptical of the automaker using a BMW engine, the performance provided by this powerplant shows that Toyota still knows what they’re doing. The 2020 Toyota Supra is exceptionally quick and capable, both on the street and the track.
